Based on the method of critical genre analysis put forward by Bbatia (2008), this paper reports an investigation of the generic relationships of research article (RA) abstracts and introductions in two sub-disciplines (second language acquisition (SLA) research and second language writing (SLW) research) of applied linguistics ,aiming to reveal the complexities between different disciplines and genres in academic discourse. Findings indicate that RA abstracts and introductions in SLW bear a greater similarity in function and organization than the same two genres in SLA. Both "Centrality Claim" and "Indicating a Gap" have a fairly important presence in RA introductions and abstracts of SLW. However, this is not the case in SLA, where "Centrality Claim" and "Literature Review" are quite important in introductions, while in abstracts they are largely absent. It is suggested that in order to understand academic writing in different disciplines, we should not only analyse the variations of a certain genre in disciplines concerned, but also explore relationships among related genres. More attention should also be given to text-external factors that influence the construction of genres.
