Objective: To investigate the effect of oxygen radicals on the development of lumbar disc herniation(LDH) in hypoxic environment by examining the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA) in soliders with lumbar disc herniation(LDH) at plateau area. Methods: The serum were obtained from the officers and soliders with LDH(the disease group) and the healthy people(the control group). The new comers from plain area were used as standard group. Those of the disease group and the control group must had been stayed on plateau for 2-5 years.Twenty-seven people were included in each group. Results: The SOD activity in the disease group was lower than that of the control group but higher than that of the standard group(P0.05).The contents of MDA in the disease group were higher than those of the control group and the standard group(P0.05).Conclusion: The oxidation and anti-oxidation system are imbalanced in the patients with LDH in plateau and the oxygen-derived free radicals are the important factors for the acceleration of disc degeneration and the occurrence of pain.
