Objective To investigate the relationship between serum γ-glutamyltransferase(GGT) level and fasting blood glucose(FBG). Methods A random,multi-stage cross-sectional study was conducted in Gaoyou,Jiangsu Province and a total of 4248 subjects was enrolled in the study. GGT,FBG and related metabolic indexes were detected.According to FBG levels, the subjects were divided into three groups of A(FBG5.6 mmol/L,n=2389),B(5.6≤FBG≤ 6.9 mmol/L,n=1677) and C(FBG≥7.0 mmol/L,n=182). Results GGT level increased in an order of group Agroup Bgroup C,which was much higer in men than that in women(P0.05).Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that GGT was a significant risk factor for high FBG,which was more sensitive in women than that in men.Logistic analysis showed that compared with the first quartile of GGT level, the OR(95%CI) value on high FBG(≥7.0 mmol/L) for the fourth quartile was 3.17(1.34,7.46) in men, which was obviously lower than 7.00(3.01,14.93) in women. ConclusionGGT is a risk predictor of high FBG and the predicting value is greater for women than for men under the same GGT levels.
