Objective To evaluate the effects of pulsed ultrasound at different intensities on development of ovarian follicle in perimenopausal SD rats. Methods Twenty-four female SD rats during perimenopausal period were selected by unforced aging, and the rats were randomly divided into 0.5 W/cm^2 group,0.8 W/cm^2 group and control group.Rats in the control group was not given any irradiation, while rats in 0.5 W/cm^2 group and 0.8 W/cm^2 group were given 10 min of pulsed ultrasound daily for 10 days with 0.5 or 0.8 W/cm^2 intensity, respectively. All the rats were sacrificed on the 11th day.Serum estrogen was measured by chemiluminescence-immunoassay,and different levels and total follicles were calculated. Results The levels of estrogen were higher in the 0.5 W/cm^2 and 0.8 W/cm^2 groups than that of control group(both P0.05).Comparing with control group, primordial follicle quantity decreased in 0.8 W/cm^2 group, and primary follicle quantity increased both in the 0.8 W/cm^2 group and 0.5 W/cm^2 group(all P0.05).Conclusion Low intensity pulsed ultrasound can promote the development of ovarian follicle in perimenopausal SD rats.
