Purpose To study the effect of manganese on monoamines and possible cellular defense mec hanism . Methods Male SD rats were given drinking water containing manganese chloride(MnCl\-2·4H\-2O 0.5 and 2.5 g/L respectively) for 90 days.At the end of experiment, all rats of the exposed groups and control group were decapitated, there brains were removed and analyzed levels of dopamine(DA),3,4 dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC),homovanillic acid(HVA),5 hydroxytryptamine(5 HT) and 5 hydroxyindole acetic acid(5 HIAA) in striatum;lipid peroxide, glutathione and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity in brain. Results 5 HIAA and HVA levels in striatum decreased significantly in heavy exposed group;SOD activities increased in exposed groups.Correlation analysis indicated that DA,DOPA levels were negatively correlated with glutathione, while 5 HIAA,HVA levels was negatively correlated with SOD activity. Conclusions Manganese may effect the metabolism of DA and 5 HT,and glutathione and SOD may partly block this course.
