In order to investigate the relationship between contents of endogeous polyamines in the ovary and parthenocarpy of cucumber, the parthenocarpic line EP-6 and non-parthenocarpic line ZR-2 were examined at different stages of ovary development. The results revealed that high levels of polyamines(PAs) could significantly promote cucumber ovary swelling and growth at early stage. In EP-6 line, spermidine(spd) and spermine(spm) levels in non-fertilized ovary were significantly higher those that in the fertilized one,and putrescine(put) and cadavarine(cad) levels in non-fertilized ovary were significantly lower than those in the fertilized one. However,in ZR-2 line, spd and spm levels were higher in fertilized ovary than those in non-fertilized one,and put and cad levels in fertilized one were lower than those in non-fertilized one.The results indicated that spd and spm were in favor of the development of cucumber ovary, and put and cad may be detrimental to the ovary development.Endogenous PAs(especially spd and spm) metabolism in cucumber ovary was the same as that of RNA and protein, reaching the highest level right before and after flowering, and then decreasing gradually. The results suggested that endogenous PAs especially spd and spm might stimulate cucumber ovary growth by regulating nucleic acid and protein synthesis.
