Objective To investigate the morphological and biomechanical remodelings of gastrointestinal(GI) tract in strept0zotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats. Methods The rat models were established with STZ injection and the rats in the control group were injected with normal saline. The blood glucose and body weight were regularly measured. Sixty days after the successful modeling, the wet weight, thickness, developing angle, and residual strain of the GI tract were measured and its stress-strain relation was analyzed. Results The absolute value of ratio of the wet weight of the esophageal and intestinal segments to the body weight, thickness, opening angle, and residual strain of inner and outer walls of GI tract was significantly higher in diabetes group than in the control group(P〈0.05 and P〈 0.01). Compared with the control group, the stiffness of the esophageal and colonic walls in circumferential and longitudinal directions increased in DM group (P〈0.05), while that of the jejunum in circumferential direction increased (P 〈0. 05 ). Conclusion The experimental diabetes induces the morphological and biomechanical remodeling of GI tract of rats. The remodeling of the walls of GI tract is likely related to the gastrointestinal disorders in the diabetic patients.
