摘　　要：作为一名文学巨匠,霍桑非常客观地说明了清教衰落的内在和外在原因,同时也以他独到的视角和犀利的笔触在作品中描绘了美国清教的排他性和残酷性。但由于所处时代和其个人的原因,清教在基督教发展史和美国历史上曾经发挥过的积极作用在霍桑的作品中却处于缺位状态。在研究霍桑的清教主题作品时,只有站在历史的高度,才能对它们进行客观的评价。As a literary master,Hawthorne illustrates the reasons of the fall of Puritanism objectively.He also portrays very uniquely and trenchantly the exclusiveness and cruelty of American Puritanism in his novels and short stories.However,due to some historical and personal reasons,Hawthorne fails to assess impartially the positive roles Puritanism used to play in the histories of both Christianity and the United States.To appraise his works objectively,discretion is needed in the understanding of that particular period of history that he represents in his works
