Objective: To investigate the roles of leukotrienes in the children with MP infection. Methods: Sixty children with MP infection in clinic were enrolled into MP infection group, and assigned into, they were di- vided into mild infection group (n = 10) , median infection group (n = 31 ) and severe infection group (n = 19), according the severity. Sixty healthy children in routing physical examinations in outpatient department were select- ed as normal controls. Serum leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and urine leukotriene (LTE4) were assessed by ELISA. Results: Significantly higher serum LTB4 and urine LTE4 were revealed in the MP infection group than those in normal control group (P 〈 0. 01 ). There was significantly positive correlation revealed between the serum LTB4 and the urinary LTE4 in the MP infection group (r =0. 522, P 〈0.01 ). There were also significantly positive cor- relation between the serum LTB4 or urinary LTE4 and the severity of MP infection ( rs = 0. 617 and 0. 567, P 〈 0. 01 ). Conclusion: LTB4 and LTE4 are elevated in the MP infection and positively correlated with the severi- ty of MP infection, suggesting that they play important roles in MP infection.
