This article, focused on the unintentional byproducts of poetic movements and institu- tions, is more sociological than formalist in orientation. When reflecting upon the three challenges to American poetry today--the conceptual poetry, the postliterary micropoetries, and the populist poetry, I sense looming before us a hmit to basic paradigms: the integrity of an individual poet' s work and the virtue of an historical approach to any body of work. What we face today is a paradigm-changing state of affairs having to do with demographics. There are now so many widely published poets that it is no longer feasible to keep track of them. The challenge is that they are very busy keeping track of one another, but at the risk of losing the historical sense altogether. The sense of the contemporary is enhanced to a previously unimaginable degree, while the past risks evaporation. But how is the past to be honored, respected and retrieved without resorting to the old paradigm of a handful of titanic figures? This is the question I attempt to answer in this ar- ticle.
