摘　　要：美国作家埃德加·爱伦·坡以其恐怖小说闻名于世,并对后世文学创作产生了广泛而深远的影响。探究其创作的时代背景及其作品显著的风格手法和思想主题,爱伦·坡恐怖小说的创作动机可以归纳为三个方面,一是他的恐怖小说创作受到了欧美哥特文学传统的影响,二是受到了其自身创作理念的支配,而最为重要的,爱伦.坡是以恐怖小说这一文学形式来彰显人性的危机。Edgar Allan Poe,the American writer,was noted for his tales of mystery and horror,which have greatly influenced the literary creation after him.Based on a comprehensive and in-depth research on the social background,Poe＇s writing style,and the themes of his works,the motivating factors in Poe＇s creation of horror stories come in three aspects,namely,the influence of Gothic literary tradition,his pursuit of aesthetic effects,and the intention to reveal the crisis in human nature.
