Objective Ketogenic diet (KD) has been used in the clinical treatment of epilepsy and shown to have a neuro- protective effect in some nervous system diseases. However, very few studies have been reported about its effect on traumatic brain in- jury (TBI). This study was to investigate the antioxidant neuroprotective effect of KD in TBI. Methods A TBI model was estab- lished in 35-day-old SD rats by Freeney weight-drop. The rats were fed on KD and normal diet (ND) for 1 week and then killed for the measurement of the wet/dry weight ratio of their brain tissues. The level of hemeoxygenase 1 ( HO-1 ) was determined by Western blot and RT-PCR. Results Cerebral edema was reduced and the expression of HO-1 up-regulated in the rats of the KD group as compared with those of the ND group. Conclusion KD plays an antioxidant neuroprotective role in TBI.
