Responding to Compliments in Cameroon French and Canadian French

摘　　要：The present study is a contribution to research in variational pragmatics and it examines compliment responses in two non-hexagonal varieties of French, namely Cameroon French and Canadian （Qu6bec） French. On the basis of data collected using Discourse Completion Tasks, we compared compliment responses by speakers of both varieties of French. We identified many similarities between these two national/regional varieties with regard to the frequencies and types of verbal simple responses, i.e., responses using only one speech act （e.g., thanking, expressing joy, agreeing） and/or complex responses, i.e., responses involving at least two speech acts （e.g., thanking ＋ returning compliment; thanking ＋ commenting ＋ downgrading） and similar preference in the overwhelming use of gratitude expressions in the construction of complex response patterns. Differences were also found in the situational distribution of the simple responses, as well as in the frequency, number, and types of speech acts used in the construction of complex responses in both varieties
