摘 要:Sentences like "I am Japanese" are usually introduced to Japanese learners of English at the beginning of their studies. The word Japanese in the sentence is an adjective, but it is almost always translated into the Japanese language as a noun. Thus, Japanese learners are probably misled by the translation to consider that English singular countable nouns are not always marked by determiners such as articles. In this study, an experiment was conducted and the results supported this hypothesis. Thus, it is suggested in this paper that teachers should emphasize their adjective characteristics when introducing words such as Japanese in the above sentence, and encourage students to obey the rule that English singular countable nouns must be determined by words such as articles.
