The first law dictionaries in modern China emerged in the late Qing Dynasty, along with the law reform and modification movement at that time and the large-scale introduction of modern Western legal systems and terminologies into China. And most of such dictionaries had something to do with the neighboring Japan.During the first two decades of the Republic of China, about 15 law dictionaries independently compiled by Chinese were published one after another. And the publication of The Great Law Dictionary by the Commercial Press in 1936 marked a peak in the compilation and publication of modern law dictionaries. This paper traces the compilation and publication of law dictionaries in modern China, which is of significance to the study of the formation, evolution and spreading of modern Chinese legal terms.
