Objective To analyze the epidemic features of metabolic syndrome(MS) among residents from fishing villages in Daishan county, and explore measures for disease prevention and control. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among a total of 1149 residents aged 18-90 years from fishing villages in Daishan county who were randomly selected by stratified cluster sampling method,MS was determined based on the criteria for the definition by the China Diabetes Society of Chinese Medical Association. Results The overall incidence of MS was 9.31% among surveyed residents with female of 10.80% which was significantly higher than that of male(7.39%).(χ2=3.91,P〈0.05).There were 47.43% of MS residents with one or two metabolic marker abnormities.Lipid disorder, hypertension and overweight/obesity were the major risk factors of MS.Residents with family history of hypertension or diabetes mellitus were more likely to suffer from MS compared to those without family history(χ2hypertension=7.22,χ2DM=5.61,P〈0.05).Conclusions There are more adult residents found to have one or two abnormalities of metabolic markers in Daishan county.A proper change of lifestyle including optical dietary and behavioral intervention should be taken to reduce the incidence of MS.
