Objective: To investigate the effect of verapamil in treatment of diastolic dysfunction in patients with hypertension. Methods: The peak early diastolic mitral flow velocity (E) and the peak late mitral flow velocity during atrial constraction (A) and the left ventricular ejective fraction (LVEF) were measured by Doppler echocardiography in hypertensive patients. The patients in whom E/Aratio< 1 and LVEF>45 % were included in the study. The verapamil sustained - release tablets were administered for 5 weeks. The rest heart rate (RR) blood pressure (BP ) .E velocity.A velocity and E/A ratio were detected before and after 5 weeks therapy with the sustained - release verapamil. Results: There are twenty - four patients in the study, the RR.DBP(diastolic blood pressure) and A velocity were decreased after 5 weeks therapy (69. 18 ± 6. 52 Vs 76. 23 ± 8. 72 (BPM), 82. 61 ± 8. 95 Vs 98. 44 ± 10. 34(mmHg), 66. 30 ± 14. 04 Vs 73. 94 ± 12. 28(cm/s), all P < 0.001), E and E/A were increased (71. 49 ± 9. 84 Vs 52. 22 ± 11. 89 (cm/s), 1. 091 ± 0. 26 Vs 0. 727 ± 0. 17, both P < 0.001). Aspnea was relieved after therapy in patients who have the symptom before therapy. Conclusion: Verapmil can improve diastolic dysfunction in patients with hypertension significantly.
