摘　　要：威廉·吉尔可谓近代西方主动且成功穿越康区的第一人。他在康区的游历考察活动,较深入地了解了康区的基本情况,取得了多方面成就,正式揭开了国际康区研究的序幕,对近代西方学术界产生了重要影响。他的代表作《金沙江》一书,系近代西方学者最早从学术史的角度论述入康外国人活动的著作,虽有其局限性,但因史料异常丰富,成为近代前期外国人认识康区的"百科全书",在他之后入康的许多外国人及其著述都以此书为圭臬。William John Gill was the first proactive westerner to have crossed through the modern Khams, capturing the unique understanding on the Khams with multi-aspect achievements made in the expeditions, and officially undraped the prelude to international Khams studies, rendering significant impact on modern western academia. Gill＇s masterpiece, The River of Golden Sand, is the first academic work on westerner in the Khams from the perspective of aca- demic history. Despite of some limitations, it plays, with its abundant historical data, the role of an encyclopedic reference for the contemporary study into the foreigner＇ s exploration in the Khams.
