摘　　要：英国19世纪现实主义作家伊莉莎白.盖斯凯尔因为在其创作的工业小说《玛丽.巴顿》和《南方与北方》中,描绘了工业革命过程中的阶级冲突问题,在20世纪60、70年代受到我国马克思主义评论家的重视。本文则试图从女性主义的视角解析这两部作品,通过分析小说中的女性人物形象,探讨盖氏对19世纪女性与慈善关系的认识。认为,盖氏不仅把女性慈善活动当作缓解阶级矛盾的良方,还将之视为让女性走出私人领域进入公共领域的重要途径。她把自己的慈善事业与创作实践相结合,在创作中表达了一种不同于男性价值观的独特人文关怀思想。The 192 century English realist writer Elizabelth Gaske11 attracted the attention of Chinese Marxist critics in 1960s and 1970s because she gave a vivid description of class contradictions in her industrial novels Mary Barton and North and South. However, this pa- per attempts to analyze the two novels from feminist perspective. It discusses Mrs. Gaskell＇ s ideas about woman and philanthropy through the analysis of characterization in the novels. It concludes that Mrs. Gaskell believed woman＇ s philanthropy not only could help ease class contradictions but also could help woman enter the public sphere. Mrs Gaskell herself just combined her philanthropy with her writing career and expressed a unique humanist thinking different from dominant male value system in her works.
