Objective To estimate the heritability of behavior problems in school-age children by twins data. Methods The behavior problems were assessed in a total of 166 twin pairs aged 6 - 12 years in Huhhot with the Child Behavior Checklist ( CBCL}. Structural equation modeling was performed to evaluate the heritability of behavior problems in school-age children. Re- suits For behavior problems of school-age children, the genetic factors { heritability) explained about 30.26% in boys and 32.80% in girls of the total variance. The heritabilities of anxiety/depression, withdrawn, thought problems, attention problems, social problems, delinquent problems, aggressive behavior and other problems were 46.79%, 56.45% , 58.59%, 79. 14%, 26.13%, 37.09%, 84.57% and 75.21% in the boys and 74.99%, 78.33%, 63.25%, 40.11%, 52.09%, 0.00%, 50.51% and 70.29% in the girls respectively. The gender effect existed in the heritabilities of attention problems and aggressive behavior, and the male~ heritabilities of them were higher than those of females. The genetic and environmental effects of the behavior problems of school-age children were not influenced by the age. Conclusion The behavior problems of school-age children are influ- enced by genetic and environmental factors. There are gender effects on the heritabilities of attention problems and aggressive behavior.
