During the Nanjing Massacre, Americans who remained in Nanjing and those who were not there but were concerned about the situation wrote extensive reports, observations, records and analyses on the incident, writings that constitute unique third-party accounts of the history of the massacre. These were disseminated in China, Europe and the United States. The accounts record the crimes of the Japanese, including massacre, rape, robbery, arson, drug trafficking and the 'comfort women' system, and expose the way the Japanese covered up their war crimes. They proved their value as evidence both in the Tokyo and the Nanjing trials. These texts were produced while the Americans were providing humanitarian aid to the Chinese army and civilians, showing American consideration of US interests in China.
