摘 要:This study offers an observation and some explanations of particular kanji-based Japanese words borrowed into the contemporary Chinese language through cultural contact, which reflect the Japanese socioeconomic and cultural influence on the contemporary Chinese life and language. It claims that China's on-going modernizations and economic reform provide a sufficient environment for Japanese economic expansion in Chinese markets, cultural influence on Chinese life, and linguistic influence on the contemporary Chinese language. It describes the genera background of the lexical borrowing phenomenon and the particular paths through which lexical borrowing from Japanese into Chinese becomes possible. As observed in the Japanese lexical items borrowed into the contemporary Chinese lexicon, the borrowed items are closely related to the extent of the Japanese cultural influence on Chinese socioeconomic change and everyday life. The study concludes that the phenomenon of lexical borrowing as observed in contemporary China is fundamentally a language contact phenomenon and a linguistic outcome through cross-linguistic and cross-cultural influence
