Objective To understand the impacts of estrogen deficiency and lead exposure on osteoporosis and finally to provide preventive criteria for osteoporosis induced by menopause and lead exposure. Methods Sixty 5 months old female rats were equally divided into three groups, i. e. the control group, after ovariotomy group, and lead exposed group. After 12 weeks, eye vein blood and a section of femur were taken. Morphology of bone tissue was investigated; calcium, phosphorus, lead and alkaline phosphatase in blood and bone were measured. Data were statistically analyzed. Results Bone tissue and hemoglobin in the control group were normal. Both calcium and phosphorus in the bone and blood in either after ovariotomy group and lead exposed group were lowered, P〈 0.01, while blood alkaline phosphatase increased, P 〈0. 01. Pathological changes of osteoporosis were found. Lead contents in both bone tissue and blood of lead exposed group were significantly higher than those of the control group(P〈0.01). Conclusions Estrogen deficiency after ovariotomy may induce osteoporosis; lead exposure may also induce osteoporosis, at the same time causing hemoglobin lowered.
