Objective To investigate the incidence of HIV infection among drug users (DUs) and to observe their related high-risk behaviors in Urumqi. Methods DUs were recruited using snowball method based on the information of police department. A face to face survey was conducted and blood samples were collected for antibody detection. Results A total of 1 516 DUs were enrolled in the study. The positive rates of antibodies against HIV, HCV and syphilis were 20.38% (309/1 516), 36.02%(546/1 516) and 2.24% (34/1 516) respectively. High-risk behavior analysis revealed that Uygur (OR: 0.45, 95%CI: 0. 34-0. 60) , male (OR: 0.62, 95%CI: 0.40-0.96) andDUs without HIV prevention service (OR: 2.32, 95%CI: 1.65-3.26) were more likely to share syringes compared to other ethics, female and those having received service. While DUs of Uighur (x2=11.98, P=0.0005) and with low AIDS basic knowledge score ( 2=4.85, P=0.0275) were less likely to use condom. Conclusions HIV infection is still a big issue among DUs in Urumqi. Therefore it is urgent to apply an effective intervention to lower the risk of infection.
