THE MANDALA FRESCO:A DIVINE UNIVERSE MADE UP OF SQUARE AND CIRCLE

摘　　要：Upon my first step into the Grotto of Peyang Dongkar by the side of Langchen Zangbo in Ngari,the most striking,also the first sight falling into my eyes,is the Mandala over all the frescos, which looks like a man’s town locating in the universe of Gods with square and circle:A Buddha sits in the middle,Buddha’s Guards and Dhammapalas of various status in all around.On top of the square gate tower,a pair of golden deer lies face to face.Out from the gate, there drifts colorful flags in the air.All things are in strict order and distinct classes,a scene of Buddhist paradise. Actually,behind the special motif of Mandala,thereUpon my first step into the Grotto of Peyang Dongkar by the side of Langchen Zangbo in Ngari, the most striking, also the first sightfalling into my eyes, is the Mandala over all the frescos, which looks like a man＇s town locating in the universe of Gods with square and circle： A Buddha sits in the middle, Buddha＇s Guards and Dhammapalas of various status in all around. Actually, behind the special motif of Mandala, there hide a vast historical ctflture background, and a far profound religious meaning.
