Since their discovery in the 1990s,microRNAs(miRNAs) have been characterized as important regulators of gene expression, mediating normal physiological processes and pathogenesis-related mechanisms,as well as being amenable to exogenous manipulation to elicit therapeutic effects. The roles of miRNAs in liver diseases, such as liver fibrosis, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),have been extensively studied. Many of the liver disease-associated miRNA-encoding genes and their downstream targets have been identified, and their direct or indirect relationship with specific disease types and stages have been confirmed both in vitro and in vivo using animal models and human tissues.Viral hepatitis is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases worldwide and a principal cause of liver damage, liver failure, and mortality associated with liver disease. At least five hepatitis viruses commonly infect humans, but hepatitis B virus(HBV) and hepatitis C virus(HCV) account for the majority of cases.Research efforts aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of and host response to hepatitis viruses have focused on the role of endogenous miRNAs in these processes. This review article presents the recent findings concerning the relationship between miRNA and viral hepatitis and discusses the implications of those findings for future development of miRNA biomarker-based diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies.
