摘　　要：以十九世纪七十年代后期的纽约上层社会为背景的小说《纯真年代》是美国作家伊迪丝·华顿最为成功的作品之一。小说通过对几位主人公的生动刻画,批判了老纽约伪善严苛的社会道德对个体命运的毁灭性影响。此外,转向内心获得力量的精神追求最终帮助小说的主人公们超越了环境的局限,走出了道德困境,获得了真正的平静和安宁。Set in the upper New York society in the late 1870s, The Age of Innocence is generally acknowledged as Wharton＇s finest work. Through her depiction of those socially trapped characters, Wharton criticizes the devastating effects of old New York＇s rigid morality on the fates of the individuals. The spiritual quest for inner power eventually helps the characters transcend the limitations of the envirormlent and step out of their moral dilemma.
