Objective: To investigate the serum levels of S100B protein in patients with chronic heart failure, and to analyze the association of S100B protein with cardiac function and etiology of heart failure. Methods:A total of 234 patients were enrolled in this study, divided into two groups according to the pathogens, dilated cardiomyopathy group (n = 133) and ischemic cardiomyopathy group (n = 101). The control group consisted of 117 healthy individuals (n = 117). Serum levels of S100B , N - terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide ( NT -proBNP ) and high sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) were determined in all subjects. Results: Serum levels of S100B were higher in patients with chronic heart failure, and were positively correlated with NT-proBNP and negatively correlated with LVEF. Increased S100B levels were associated with major cardiac events, but the differences of S100B levels in patients with CHF caused by dilated cardiomyopathy and ischemic cardiomyopathy were not remarkable. Conclusion: S100B protein is highly expressed in patients with chronic heart failure, and its serium level is negatively correlated with cardiac function, suggesting S100B protein may be an independent risk factor for chronic heart failure.
