Experiments indicated that the predominant adsorption mechanism of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) on leathers is electrostatic interaction. On the basis of this principle, a novel method was proposed to determine the isoelectric point of pelts and leathers by using pelt or leather as absorbent and SDBS as absorbate. The optimal determination conditions for this method were established as follows : 100mL of 0. 5mg/mL SDBS solution is absorbed by 0. 2g pelt or leather powder for 4h at 30℃, so that the equilibrium adsorption amounts of SDBS (qe) at different pH values are determined. The curve of qe - pH is plotted and then the isoelectric point of pelt or leather is obtained. By this method, the isoelectric points of a series of pelts and leathers were determined. They are 8.4 ~ 8.5 for soaked skin, 7. 1 ~ 7.2 for delimed pelt, 5.8 ~ 5.9 for pickled pelt, 7.7 - 7.9 for chrome tanned leather, 8.5 ~ 8. 6 for aluminum tanned leather, 7.3 ~ 7.4 for zirconium tanned leather, 5. 1 ~ 5.2 for glutaral- dehyde tanned leather and 5.8 - 5.9 for TWT tanned leather. In general, these isoelectric point values are reasonable for practical features of the pelis and leathers, which shows that this method could be widely applied in leather field.
