OBJECTIVE To study the effect of different loads of exercise on blood serum Th1/Th2 balance (by IFN-γ/IL-4 ratio) in SD rats after acute mental stress. METHODS 56 rats were divided into 7 groups randondy. The rats were carried through a swimming training of 12 weeks and exerted on a 15 minutes acute mental stress in the last and the level of Th1 cytokine (IFN-γ) and Th2 cytokine (IL-4) were measured within one hour and then the ratios of IFN-γ/IL-4 were compared. RESULTS (1) Compared with the control group, the ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 in mental stress group rose significantly (P 〈 0.05 ). (2) Compared with mental stress group; both ratios of IFN-γ/IL-4 in stress + exercise groups were hoisted, tbereinto, the ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 in stress +60minites exercise group was higher significantly than that in mental stress group (P 〈 0.01 ). CONCLUSION Th1/Th2 balance in SD rats is affected significantly by actual mental stress.h makes the Th1/Th2 cell function to deviate from Th2 to Th1 and this enhances cell immune function of SD rats. The low and moderate exercise can promote further this kind of deviation. Furthermore, the effect of moderate exercise is better than that of low exercise.
