In this study, the soybean variety Brazil No. 10 (BX10), which exhibit stronger resistance to both phosphorus deficiency and aluminum toxicity, and the contrasting soybean variety BD2 were cultivated in 1/5 Hoagland and used to investigate the changes in the reduced homoglutathione (hGSH) content, oxidative/reductive status, and activities of glutathione S-tranferase( GST), glutathione reductase ( GR), and glutathiane peroxidase (GPX) under low phosphorus availability and aluminum toxicity. The result showed : (i) both low phosphorus availability and aluminum toxicity increased the hGSH content, oxidative/reductive ratio, and the activities of GST, GR, and GPX; BX10 showed a higher increase percentage than BIY2 in comparison to the corresponding control groups; (ii) gene expression patterns of GST, GR, and GPX involved in glutathione metabolism in response to low phosphorus availability and aluminum toxicity were also determined and analyzed, in which GST displayed the higher expression quantity under aluminum toxicity in roots and GPX exhibited the higher expression quantity under aluminum toxicity. This suggested that soybean glutathione metabolism was highly correlated to low phosphorus availabillty and aluminum toxicity.
