An Empirical Study of Research Productivity in Chinese Universities

摘  要:充分考虑到高校教学和社会服务职能以及内部资源分配对科研活动的影响,本文提出研究我国高校知识生产创造活动的理论框架,并基于教育部直属高校2000~2008年的统计数据进行了实证分析。研究发现,高校参与科研活动的高级职称研究人员的比例对发明专利申请的增加有显著影响;重视基础研究有助于增加SCI论文;在校本专科生规模对科研产出有负面影响,而研究生数量的增加则对科研活动有积极贡献;加强与企业联系有助于增加高校的发明专利的申请和EI期刊论文发表。最后,基于对教育部直属高校的聚类分析,本文有针对性地提出了一些政策建议。Taking into account the distinctive missions of universities, this paper proposed an integrated framework to analyze the production of new knowledge in Chinese universities. The empirical estimation was based on a panel dataset constructed for Chinese research universities during 2000-2008. In order to present a holistic view of university research activities, multiple indicators were incorporated to measure different types of research outcomes, including patents, SCI and EI articles. It is found that determinants of university research productivity vary across research outcomes. In particular, the input of high-level faculty engaged in research activities has a significant contribution to patenting. The amount of research resource devoted to basic research positively affects the number of SCI articles. Teaching load decreases research productivity of university scientists. On the basis of estimated results, a categorical analysis was conducted and Chinese universities were classified into different groups for which distinctive policy implications were discussed.
