Objective:To evaluate the relation between serum homocysteine(Hcy) and TCM syndrome types in essential hypertension(EH) patients.Methods:200 cases of essential hypertension were divided into the following 4 syndromes; hyperactivity of liver-fire syndrome, hyperactivity of dampness and phlegm retetion syndrome, yin deficiency and yang excess sydnrome, deficiency of both yin and yang syndrome.Serum homocysteine in patients of EH and the normal control group were detected by enzymatic cycling method. Results:Hcy level in patients of EH was significantly higher than that of healthy controls(P0.01).Hcy level in the hypertensive patients with different syndromes of TCM was significantly higher than that of healthy controls(P0.01).Hcy level in the hypertensive patients with liver-fire syndrome, dampness and phlegm retetion syndrome was significandy higher than that of yin deficiency and yang excess syndrome and deficiency of both yin and yang syndrome(P0.01).Conclusion:Abnormal increase of serum Hcy level is an important risk factor of EH.The significant increase of plasma Hcy level is a Chinese medical pattern identification index of the patients with liver-fire syndrome dampness and phlegm retetion syndrome.
