The effects of ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) containing substances ethanol extracted from persimmon leaves on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in mice were inrestigated. The acute hepatic injury model was carried out by CC14 injected intraperitoneally. Then, the therapeutic effects of EAF were evaluated based on the activities of alanine aminotransferas (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver, and the changes of hepatic pathohistology. The results indicated that different doses of EAF significantly lowered ALT, AST, AKP levels in serum and MDA level in liver along with the restoring of hepatic enzymes like SOD, GPx, and CAT against CCl4 treated mice. The pathological changes were also significantly improved in the mice of treating group. Furthermore, it was found that 100 mg/kg was the optimal dose for exhibiting the greatest hepatoprotective effects on CCl4-induced liver injury, indicating that EAF of adequate dose exhibits potent hepatoprotective effects on CCl4-induced acute liver damages in mice.
