摘　　要：自从尼采断言悲剧己经死亡,悲剧的涵义、甚至悲剧存在与否一直是颇具争议的问题。奥尼尔的悲剧也是争论的焦点。作者从影响深远的悲剧理论中,找到悲剧共同之处(宣泄、严肃性和人类的生存困境),并以此来证明奥尼尔的作品是悲剧。Eugene O＇Neill took a serious and innovative attitude to drama and his achievement was remarkable. However,there is controversy over the existence of modem tragedy. This thesis finds out the common propositions of traditional tragic theories. They are having the function of catharsis,being tragic and concerning with human existential anxiety,by which O＇Neill＇s plays are proved to be tragedies.
