Diets with similar concentrations of equivalent forage neutral detergent fiber (FNDF) and nonfiber carbohydrates(NFC) in corn-silage based diets could result in similar responses in ruminal function, digestibility and microbial protein synthesis. To prove this hypothesis, four different forages(alfalfa, oat straw, leymus chinensis and rice straw) were choosed as FNDF sources in this experiment. A completely random design was used and formulated diets consisted of corn silage providing about 24.9 g/100g FNDF with either alfalfa hay, oat straw, leymus Chinensis or rice straw that provided 4.75 g/100g FNDF. The results showed that: On the basis of corn silage diet, ruminal fermentation, fiber digestibility and microbial protein synthesis were similar among diets(P〉0.05). Therefore, based on this study, it could be concluded that feeding these diets with similar concentration of FNDF and NFC to cows in late lactation provided evidence that high-quality forage could be substituted by low-quality forage.
