Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS)and bone mineral density in senior patients. Methods To selected 460 senior male patients with health examination. The body mass in- dex (BMI) and blood pressure were determined or calculated. The levels of fasting blood-glucose (FBG) ,total cho- lesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured. Bone mineral density index (T and Z) were detected. The correlation of BMD with other metabolic risk factors was analyzed. Results In comparison with without MS, the levels of BMI, systolic blood pres- sure ( SBP), diastolic blood pressure ( DBP), FBG, TG, T and Z score were higher ( t = 11. 708,5. 718,5. 784, 8. 104,11. 309,2. 429 or 2. 135, P 〈 0.05 ), while serum HDL-C level was lower in MS ( t = 8. 120, P 〈 0.05 ). Spearman analysis showed that BMD was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0. 219 ,P 〈 0.05 ), and was negatively correlated with age ( r = - 0. 219, P 〈 O. 05 ). Conclusion The obesity of MS has beneficial effect to BMD.
