摘　　要：威斯坦.休.奥登是20世纪英语诗坛的重要诗人之一。无论是在他深受唯物主义历史观影响的早期,还是在他皈依基督教后的岁月里,他的思想和创作始终折射出线性历史意识,从而体现了他对待世界的态度和认知事物的方式。在他看来,历史是由人类的"选择"构成的不可逆转的集合体,虽然历史事件一再证明了人们的错误选择,但人类必定能够凭借"自我意识"和"自由意志"做出更为正确的选择。Wystan Hugh Auden is widely known as one of the greatest poets in the field of English poetry in the 20th century. His concept of linear history, which is influenced by the materialistic view of history in the early period and the Christian view of history in the later period, reflects his worldview and his way to cognize the things. To him, history is a continuous and irreversible succession of choices made by ourselves. Though the historical events have proven their wrong choices again and again, people are sure to make more appropriate choices with their self-consciousness and free will.
