Objective To investigate the perceived level and sources of stress and mental health among male nursing undergraduates. Methods Totally 129 male nursing undergraduates and 153 female nursing undergraduates were investigated with Beck-Srivastava Stress Scale(BSSI) and the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90). Results The main stressors of male nursing undergraduates were various examinations, competition among classmates, affection problems, professional attitudes, personal habits, economic status and career development, which were not different from female nursing undergraduates(P〉0.05). However, the score of BSSI of male nursing undergraduates was significantly higher than female nursing undergraduates(P〈0.01 ). The factor scores of interpersonal relationships, anxiety, fear and paranoid in SCL-90 were significantly higher among male nursing undergraduates than female students(P〈0.01 or P〈0.05). Conclusion Male nursing undergraduates experience the same stressors as female students, but with higher level of stress. Their mental health are poorer than female nursing students. It is suggested to take active psychological intervention and counseling to relieve their psychological pressure and prevent mental disorders.
