The biochar prepared from pyrolysis of chicken manure was used as sorbent to removal phosphate in aqueous solution. The kinetics, influence factors and mechanism of phosphate adsorption was preliminary discussed in this paper. The results showed that the obtained biochar had the property of high ash content and high specific surface area, which was benefit for phosphate adsorption. The pseudo first-order kinetics could better describe the dynamic behavior of phosphate adsorption on surface of biochar. The preliminary adsorption mechanism of phosphate removal was adsorption onto the colloidal and nano-sized MgO particles on biochar surface. Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundl- ich models fitted the adsorption isotherm better than Langmuir adsorption model, proved the heterogeneous process of phosphate adsorption, pH had significant effect on the adsorption process because it could influence the form of phos- phate in solution. The competitive adsorption of different ions was occurred on surface of sorbent, so it could decrease the phosphate adsorption capacity of biochar. In conclusion, the phosphate removal chicken manure biochar was cost- effective and feasible to application, which was a strategy of controlling waste by waste.
