摘 要:鸦片战争以后,借着不平等条约的保护,传教士涌入中国各地开展传教活动。在遭到种种抵制之后,传教士选择了创办学校作为入侵中国的突破口。湖南教会学校也是在这种情况下应运而生的。传教士的侵略本性和湖南人民历史上形成的反外排外心理,是甲午中日战争前传教士在湖南难以立足的主要原因。传教士重心转向办学校和甲午中日战争后湖南绅民的求变心理,为传教士在湖南办学提供了广阔的舞台。Under the protection of the unfair treaty after the Opium War, missionaries surged into (shlna to engage in missionary work. When they were encountered different resistances, they chose to set up schools as another ag- gression into China to spread their religious beliefs, hence came the missionary schools in Hunan Province. Mis- sionaries' invasion and Hunan people's objection and resistance to foreigners accounted for the reason why mission- ary schools could not survive before 1895. But later on, missionaries' priority to setting up schools and the gentry as well as common people's eagerness for a change provided the missionaries with a great opportunity for setting up schools in Hunan Province.
