摘　　要：本文旨在剖析伯克维奇对科顿·马瑟的阐释,探讨伯克维奇的清教想象与"美国"神话间的关系,评析伯克维奇的认识模式与批评方法,并认为,在历经40年后的今天,其洞见作为美国例外主义的一种叙述,对我们认识美国依然具有重大启迪。Abstract： Starting from the analysis of Bercovitch＇s reading of Cotton Mather, the present essay discusses Bercovitch＇s interpretation of the relationship between Puritan imagination and the myth of ＂America＂, explores his interpretation model and method, and argues that his discovery of ＂America＂, as a narrative of American exceptionalism, is still fresh and relevant almost 40 years after the initial publication of The Puritan Origin of American Self.
