Objective To investigate the significance of CD4+CD25 +Foxp3 + regulatory T cells (F regs) in infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis. Methods Twenty-four infants with RSV bronchiolitis, twenty-eight infants with non-RSV pneumonia and eighteen healthy infants were enrolled. The percentages ofCD4+CD25 +Foxp3 + T regs in peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometer and analyzed among three groups. Results The percentage of CD4+CD25 +Foxp3 + T regs was (10.2 ± 1.2)% in infants with RSV bronchiolitis, which was markedly lower than those in infants with non-RSV pneumonia (11.5± 1.5)% and in the healthy infants (12.7 ±2.1)% (P 〈 0.05). Furthermore, the percentage of CD4+CD25 +Foxp3 + T regs in infants with non-RSV pneumonia was also lower than that in healthy infants, with statistically significant difference. Conclusions The percentage of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regs markedly reduced in peripheral blood in infants with RSV bronchiolitis. The immune dysfunction resulting from the change of T regs may be one important factor of the pathogenesis and evolution of RSV bronchiolitis.
