Objective To investigate the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications in elderly hypertensive patients with controlled blood pressure. Methods A total of 120 elderly patients with hypertension, who were admitted to our hospital from November 2008 to November 2010, were randomly selected and divided into observation group (n = 60) and control group (n = 60). The observation group was treated by medication and self management, while the control group was treated by self management alone. The blood pressure of each patient in observation group was controlled, but the blood pressure of each patient in control group was still higher than normal. Both groups were followed up for 3 years after treatment and compared in terms of the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications. Results The observation group had a significantly lower overall incidence rate of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications than the control group (13.3% vs 31.7%, P〈O.05). Conclusion The incidence rate of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications is reduced in the elderly hypertensive patients with controlled blood pressure. Timely effective measures for enhancing blood pressure control are of great clinical significance for elderly hypertensive patients.
