Known as "Model Calligraphy-scripts in the Garden of Harmony", the 101 pieces of inscribed stelea in the Garden of Harmony bring together the famous model scripts of traditional calligraphers in the past generations, the handwriting of Wu-school scholars with local features, and works reflecting noble sentiments such as Painting of Inked Bamboo and book collections by Donglin literati. From them, we can catch a glimpse not only of the elegant life of the past owner and the Wu-school literati who took delight in calligraphy, painting and poetry-chanting, but also of the prosperous fashion of collecting and inscribing model calligrphy-scripts in Wu school since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The calligraphy in Suzhou classical gardens, best exampled by the inscribed stelea, unites the beauty of art and humanism, therefore deserving our protection and dissemination. Only by the preservation and promotion of the relic itself and its content as well as the cultivation of technical talents can we transform this art into sustainable resources and jointly make our contribution to the flourishment of the traditional Wu culture and arts.
