There is abundance of lignite resources in China. However, lignite is not widely used due to its high water content, easy and spontaneous combustion, and relapse. In order to improve the quality of lignite and its application performance, Xilinhot Baiyinhua lignite (XL) and Shendong lignite (SD) were treated by NaOH solution in this study. The wettabilities of treated coal and raw coal were characterized by contact angle measurement instrument while the water-holding capacities were analyzed by re-adsorption water contents experiment and equilibrium water contents across a range of relative vapor pressure. Furthermore, the reason for the change of water-holding capacity of the lignite was analyzed by measuring the amount of oxygen-containing functional groups of alkali-soluble part. The results show that the contact angle of XL and SD coal samples are increased by 35.8 ℃ and 43.7 ℃ , respectively, after treated with NaOH. The water re-absorption contents of treated lignite are attributed to the reduction of oxygen-containing functional groups in coal samples after NaOH treated. NaOH treatment is an efficient method for reducing the ability of water re-sorption in lignite. In addition, the equilibrium moisture contents of all samples depend on the change of the relative vapor pressures.
