摘　　要：小说《红字》描述了齐灵渥斯对妻子(海斯特.白兰)、情敌(丁梅斯代尔)以及珠儿———"他"的女儿三个人物的不同态度和言行。整部小说的发展过程象征着人与人之间的纷繁复杂的斗争,人同外在社会伦理道德之间的冲突,以及当今不完美的人与未来完美的人之间的冲突,进而阐明齐灵渥斯的孤独而善良、自赎而救赎、报复而容忍的人物性格的复杂性和多面性。The novel ＂The Scarlet Letter＂ describes Chillingworth＇s different attitude and behavior to the three characters, including his wife （Hester Prynne）, rival （Dimmesdale） and Pearl - ＂his＂ daughter. The development of the novel symbolizes the complex struggle among people, the conflict be- tween people and the external social ethics, as well as the clash between the imperfect human today and the perfect in the future, and illustrates complex and multi- faceted characters of Chillingworth： loneli- ness but kindness, self- redemption and salvation, revenge and tolerance.
