摘　　要：亨利.詹姆斯在小说创作中常常放弃复杂的文字表达,追求无言的理想描述,大量的空白、沉寂构成其作品的艺术特色。沉寂内涵丰富而深邃,能展现难以用语言表达的心理意识。空无隐含着幽深的意境,沉默潜藏着巨大的效能。《一位女士的画像》这部力作正是詹姆斯空白、沉寂和未言"另类语言"艺术的最佳佐证。In literary creation, Henry James would like to pursue the ideal description of silence, instead of expressing his thoughts and feelings in words. Silence forms the artistic features of his works. Silence is rich and deep in cormotation~ Nothingness contains pro- found implication and silence conceals tremendous power. The art of ＂silence＂ is fully and forcibly exemplified in The Portrait of a Lady.
