Soil phosphorus (P) composition of brown earth, black soil and cinnamon soil in Northeast China were studied by solution 31p nuclear magnetic resonance (np NMR) spectroscopy. Relationships between 3T NMR P composition and soil phosphatase activities were also discussed in this study. Results showed that orthophosphate and phosphate monoesters were accounted for half of soil phosphorus in brown earth and black soil, respectively. Orthophosphate was the dominant form of P in cinnamon soil while orthophosphate monoesters could only account for 18% of total P. Brown earth and black soil contained quantitative pyrophosphate while cinnamon soil had no pyrophosphate. Calcareous soil property of cinnamon soil caused its large amount of orthophosphate, less monoesters and no pyrophosphate in soil. Inositol phosphates were identified in the three soils. Brown earth and cinnamon soil contained myo-inositol phosphate and one unidentified inositol phosphate while black soil contained scyllo-inositol phosphate. Soil phosphatase showed that the activities in black soil were higher than those in brown earth and cinnamon soil. Soil orthophosphate and monoester contents all showed significantly positive relationships with soil phosphatase activities.
