The effect of three kinds of electrolytes (NaCl, KCl and Na2CO3 ) with different valent of anion and cation on the rheological behaviors of sodium alginate(SA) solutions is investigated . Results show that the viscoelastic properties of SA solutions remain stable in the presence of electrolytes with a low concentration at the range of 0-0.5 mol/L. With the increase of the electrolytes concentration, however, the electrolytes show a remarkable influence on rheological behaviors. It is found that NaCl and KCI play a greater role in the viscoelastic behaviors of SA solutions than Na2 CO3. The effects of NaCl on the rheological properties of SA are more pronounced. When the content of NaCl is below 0.9 mol/L, viscosity and modulus of the solution increase with the increasing of NaCl concentration. But it is noted that with the NaCl content reached up to 1.1 mol/L, viscosity and modulus of the solution reduce rapidly. Whereas, the viscosity and modulus of the solution increases with adding KCl into the SA solutions and the gel will be formed with highest strength by adding KCI in this work. The effects of Na2CO3 system are weak and the gel cannot formed.
